Threshold
The series of images entitled ‘Threshold’ evolved out of a body of work I began as Artist in Residence at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney in 2009. Coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of the publication of ‘On the Origin of Species’ my artistic endeavours over that year became an exploration of evolution and biodiversity.
Fascinated with the idea of a genetic lineage running back to the very first beginnings of life on earth I was interested in finding a visual metaphor to express the evolutionary journey from single cell to Homo sapiens.
As the winner of the Facade Project in 2011, it was shown for one year on the facade of the Visual Arts Centre in Bendigo.
Seven images in all, Threshold is a calligraphic shorthand or hieroglyph for what has been a 3.8 billion year journey from single cell to the emergence of man.
